your rafting adventure.

guides for the day who will outfit you with all the gear necessary and all

safety rules for the day on the river.

You’ll find clean restrooms, changing rooms and any last minute items you might have forgotten.

Bring a change of cloths.

Then it’s off to the river to challenge the Rio Grande’s most popular sections.

After your river adventure NM Wine Tours will pick you back up at the rafting headquarters at 12.

We do give you plenty of time to change and freshen up.

Then off we go for lunch, wine tasting at three wineries with award winning wineries.

Lunch will be served at the winery.

You can’t get a more enjoyable day!

Wine tasting after your rafting is not to much to fit into one day it actually goes together quite well.

The Racecourse

This is the most popular rafting trip in New Mexico.

Perfect trip for first timer whitewater enthusiasts.

It is class II-III(IV at high water) and absolutely perfect for everyone.

When the water levels are especially high, we do raise the minimum age

as this section grows into an extremely fun and continuous section of

class III and IV whitewater.

Minimum age for the Racecourse is 5 (13 at higher water levels).

You can always change the trip you have chosen the day before your tour date.

Any questions regarding the class of the river please contact

New Mexico River adventures at (800) 983-7756

Orilla Verde Float

This is perfect trip for the entire family or those who just feel like a lazy

float down the river. It also affords us time to practice paddling techniques,

swimming and simply enjoying the Rio Grande

Toward the end of the trip we will float through the historic village of

Pilar before continuing through some fun class II rapids.

New Mexico River Adventures guides are the best in the business, focusing on safety

and guest service as a top priority. All are extremely knowledgeable about the area’s geology, ecology

and history and just love being on the river. Many with experience on rivers all over the country

and across the globe. The Racecourse is unique in that we can always run these trips all spring, summer and fall! The higher water levels on these stretches are usually in the late spring as the snow melt

comes off of the mountains. During the middle to late summer months, the water levels get lower and the water temperature rises. These are great times for everyone to enjoy as the swimming is superb and the rapids still fun and challenging for all ages.

With rapids that range in difficulty from class 2 to 3, it is a truly a great trip for the entire family!

What to Bring

“What should I wear?”

The best bet for staying comfortable in the cooler times on the river is to wear as much synthetic clothing as possible. During spring time and high runoff, we recommend that our guests wear a bathing suit under the provided wetsuit and splash gear. If you prefer to skip the wetsuit, capilene or polypropylene long underwear on top and bottom is the best bet along with fleece on the colder days. In the height of summer, swim trunks and a t-shirt or rash guard work really well. We do wear helmets on most of our trips and some people find that a baseball caps offer further sun protection underneath. One of the most important aspects of what to wear rafting is footwear. All of our guests are informed that flip flops are a no-no and we prefer if you wear aqua socks, any sandal with a heel strap or an old pair of tennis shoes.

  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Sturdy shoes such as sandals with a heel strap, tennis shoes or aqua socks/water shoes
  • NO FLIP-FLOPS
  • Hat-We do wear helmets on most of our trips, but a baseball style works under the helmet
  • Most people wear a t-shirt and shorts
  • Change of clothes for after the trip
  • If you get cold easily or your trip is in the spring, it is a good idea to bring long underwear and/or a fleece
  • Any medication you may need
  • A gratuity for your guide if you see fit
  • A GREAT ATTITUDE AND BE READY TO HAVE SOME FUN!!

We do offer hats, shirts, water, sunscreen and water shoes for sale if you have left any of these items at home.  We look forward to seeing you!

Most of our guests love to bring a waterproof camera along on the trip. Many brands come equipped with an elastic strap that can hook onto the top latch on your lifejacket, making it easy to access throughout the trip. We do not recommend bring non-waterproof cameras or phones on the river with you. New Mexico River Adventures has a private photographer that will snap your hilarious expressions as you come through the last rapid and are available for purchase once you are back at our headquarters.

Another frequently asked question is, “What is a good tip for my guide?” Industry standard is anywhere from 10%-20% of the total trip cost factored in with the level of service you feel you received on your adventure. We know we have the best guides on the river, so every experience is top notch!

THE FEASTING PLACE (Add-On)

Add this wonderful class to your custom private tour! Experience great memories on this day with local flavor!

We have partnered with The Feast Day Cooking class, bringing you a wonderful day of cooking some traditional native foods that would be served on their Feast Days. Located on the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo.

While you are having fun cooking your feast meal, Norma & Hutch will enlighten you with their history and culture of not only their pueblo, but all the Northern New Mexico pueblos. Hutch even shows you how to make an Horno oven. Enjoy a comfortable, warm, and cozy family-style sit-down lunch of everything you have cooked. Norma and Hutch welcome you into their lovely home. Gather your friends and family, a day to truly remember!

Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo was established around 1200 AD, then taken over in 1598 by Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Onate who changed the name to San Juan Pueblo after John the Baptist. Each June 24th they would have a feast in honor of Saint Juan. In November of 2005, the pueblo returned to its original name Ohkay Owingeh (meaning Place of the Strong People).

Hutch and Norma plant and raise their crops in Santa Clara Pueblo, continuing their families’ agricultural and feasting traditions. Farming much as their ancestors did, without using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the beef is grass-fed, and almost all ingredients for meals are homegrown. Crops such as chili, chico corn, various types of squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. are canned, dried, or frozen.

The preparation steps that culminate with the feast day meal are taken throughout the year with intent and design. It is the planting, the nurturing during the growing season, the harvesting, the storing and preserving of foods, and then preparing the food for the feast meal with ingredients as fresh as they can be.

Hands-on horno baking includes bread, pies, cookies, and learning to prepare a feast dish. Share cultural backgrounds during an intimate and informative half-day class while experiencing a traditional Pueblo meal. Enjoy learning cooking techniques and take home an experience. If you are a vegetarian, Norma will customize your meal just for you.

After your cooking class and feast meal, the rest of the day is yours to visit attractions & wineries! You may join an already existing class & tour, or customize your very own private day with 4 people or more, or equivalent pricing for a custom tour. Let us know if interested if there are less than 4 & we will see if the date is available.

We will post under special tours for a Join-In cooking class and tour. This is a great way of learning about the pueblo people, tasting great wines and visiting some beautiful countryside. Due to Covid-19 until things change we are only taking reservations for private small group tours of 4 or less.
